We love the Glue Society and their soft spoken/big stick approach to site specific sculptures. They have a way of altering our field of vision just enough for a violent double take, leaving you wondering about motives. 300 Tonnes features an excavator buried by its own mechanical clawed hand, under 300 tons of sand. More...
A collection of work created over the last few years culminating in an almost linear narrative. The story could be describing a personal history or it may be visual description of the evolution of the human condition. How we see and experience it and how the painter experiences it could be very similar or different but there is something that speaks each one of us in his work. More...

HF Feature Interview with Colin Johnson

Colin Johnson is immersed in a loving obsession that he calls his "hyper-collage" works. Having an undaunted interest in his mercurial pursuits has lead him on many an intricate visual adventure, yet leaves him enough of a toehold in the physical world to relate some of his thoughts on art and life to us. From the cold tundra known as the Lands of Eternal Winter (well not really, but it's more than cold) deep in the heart of Minnesota, one artist finds a way to spend the hours on a very creative and personal pursuit.
Look out! Brandi Milne's solo show, Run Rabbit, Run opens at Thinkspace Gallery in L.A., tonight, April 10th at 7p.m. The show will feature a knock out ensemble of paintings and wood cut-outs. Also, featured (my personal favorite part of this show) are the collection of hand painted antique books, an homage from Brandi to her mother. We stopped in to the gallery last week for a visit as Andrew Hosner and the gang began hanging the show and we stole a few shots before the work went up. more...

Mark Ryden's YHWH

Ryden fans of lesser means rejoice! After three years in production, a “miserable, hellish ordeal” wryly according to co-creator Long Gone John, Mark Ryden will have his first vinyl figure available through Ryden’s publishing arm Porterhouse and Long Gone John’s company Necessaries Toy Foundation (who also did a series of figures for Camille Rose Garcia.)

A 3-D representation of “YHWH”, an amorphous pink blobby bunny mini god with multiple eyes taken from Ryden’s painting of the same name, the figure is just beginning to reach the home stretch after dealing with multiple production companies as well as Ryden’s eye for absolute perfection with anything he is affiliated with.

“It seems like this should have been an easy figure to make” say John, “But actually it was incredibly difficult to mold properly. I ended up having to just walk away from the initial manufacturer and just write off all the attendant expenses because it just couldn’t seem to be made like we wanted”. After moving to second manufacturer “ all the same problems happened again. It’s just a hard piece to pull out of a mold. Also, Ryden is very picky about the smallest detail being correct. This is based on his art and we knew it had to measure up, so we chucked prototype after prototype....”

Read complete details on YHWH And check out behind-the-scenes shots of Brian McCarty shooting the photo for the back cover ad in Hi-Fructose Vol.11 here!

The work of San Francisco artist Jenny Bird Alcantara explores the "complex interconnectedness of opposites as seen through the prism of myth, fable and fantasy." Her work primarily exists as oil on wood but also takes the form of excuisitely hand made dolls (see Hi-Fructose Vol.I) Which bear the signs of inspiration from Victorian costumes, folk art, and religious iconography, "as well as all the beautiful and sad things that could not exist one without the other, life and death and the veil in between."

Treacherous Gardens, is Jenny's newest solo show opening April 3red at Varnish Fine Arts in San Francisco. More...

It features a ginormous statue of a pigeon, with the added presence of a miniscule scruffy human defecating on its head. Is it a statement on the evolutionary state of things in the world or the Big Apple or revenge upon the dirty, dirty birds? James Dive of The Glue Society says of the work that it was specifically created for the city of New York City and it represents “a comment on social strata.” You must check out these pictures to get a closer look here so you can decide for yourselves.

I'm always amazed on how many people haven't seen Maywa Denki, the "company" of art rocker toy/music/robotic genius geniis responsible for permanently shifting the state of reality .00001 degrees in the right direction; just enough so that everything seems that much more redicul...redonkul...redic...awesome. Here's their kids show I just finally discovered. I love the second part where they get all folky, too. I'm going to start a rumor of a Maywa Denki/Friends With You/Toykestra/Toy Death/Cookie Mongoloid/Twink/Captured By Robots tour and maybe it'll happen if we wish hard enough. You can see more of them in The HF Collected Edition.

The subject matter of Natalia's work has long been a source of fascination for us especially in these uber politically correct times. Last Saturday we touched down in Tokyo to join friends and fans of Mark Ryden in order to see his latest exhibition "The Snow Yak Show" at the Tomio Koyama Gallery. This show marked a bit of a departure for the artist, whose previously brightly colored palette and rich back rounds were replaced by a more austere, minimal look and staying to a serene palette of white and grey tones. Gone also were the opulent frames, with the artist choosing slim white frames instead. The gallery had two rooms devoted to the show, one small room full of drawings and sketches which all quickly sold, and the large room held the paintings, of which there were seven (also almost sold out last time I sneaked a peek at the impressive price list). Assorted well-wishers in the house included artists Tim Biskup, Junko Mizumo, and Chris Berens, Brad Keech from Pressure Printing/Porterhouse, Colin Turner from Last Gasp, and Michael Kohn of Kohn Gallery and of course Ryden's muses Marion Peck, Jessicka of Scarling and "anti-mogul" Long Gone John. I spent part of the evening taking a bunch of shots before it became too crowded...

Art Roll Pt.II: Joe Vaux "Manimal"/Dan May "Slow Collision"

(above, Tricked by Treats, Joe Vaux.) Our second stop, and final destination for the art roll, is the home of solo exhibits for Joe Vaux and Dan May. With that beautiful window
of cool fresh (and rainless) air, the crowd at CoproNason Gallery was in a festive and appreciative mood. Well, with good measure, for they
were in for a visual treat of some magnitude. Dan and Joe's work really compliments the other quite well.

I found out that both went to Syracuse University in New York, though at separate times. And with strong desire for being creative, they each managed to carve out their respective niches to preside for one favorable moment on adjoining gallery room's walls. The rest, as they say, is history. More...

Being that most of Los Angeles had lived with the wonderful, if not somewhat daunting rains the whole week, the break in the weather was just what the Dr. ordered. The people wanted to have a break from the wetness for just a minute, and got their wish on just the right moment - Saturday night! They showed up in droves for Harley-Davidson's "The Art of Rebellion", a showcase of the fine art world's best and brightest on their familiar wall-adorning mediums of choice, as well as a special piece produced by each on the company's Sportster 883 gas tanks. More...

Propagandist/artist Shepard Fairey (arguably the most publicly recognizable name in art right now) was arrested for putting an OBEY poster up on the way to his Boston Contemporary Art solo retrospective, "Supply and Demand." All eyes are on him (for better or worse) as he installed a 20-by-50 foot banner (legally) on the side of Boston City Hall earlier this week and as he battles the Associated Press over the snap shot used as reference for the Obama posters (and the knock-off hordes of items that soon followed!). Look for an exclusive article on Fairey in Hi-Fructose vol.11, where Ert O'Hara goes on a night of wheat-pasting with the insatiable Giant.
Tuesdays are not the usual fare for an art outing, nor are they the norm for openings. But as you can see below, Tuesday was possibly the perfect moment for the debut solo show for the super talented and equally wonderful Brandt Peters. Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles hosted the festive event, boasting a turnout of loving fans and appreciation for the artist and his admirably wondrous better half, Kathie Olivas. The exhibit features a broad spectrum of Brandt's talents, including original paintings, drawings, custom toys, sculptures, and even a couple of the coveted collaborations between said husband / wife creative duo. Take a look into the happenings of the night...

It's a rare treat that an art show has excited me about traveling to downtown LA, even though the scenery has changed for the better in certain oasis-like areas. Worlds on Fire," an exhibit put on by Grammy nominated recording artist Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, showcased a solid array of talent from known and even unknown artists. Having called on his friend Kris Lewis, as well as Justin Giarla of the Shooting Gallery and the glittering behemoth known as the fashionable and effective GenArt set, the show was bound to go off. more...
His latest offerings are a group of lush new paintings for his solo show "Seeing Things," opening February 5th, 2009 at FIFTY24SF Gallery in San Francisco's lower Haight district. Artist Nathan Spoor caught up with Greg as he worked to complete the show and brings us this tasty update. Included is a incredibly generous sneak peek at two of the newest pieces in the show plus even more generous, are glimpses of his working sketches. Continued...
Race is the elephant in the room, explored some, but perhaps not as much as it should have been. Obama was the only candidate NOT to visit the Lorraine, probably because he couldn't politically. Why not is an important question to discuss. As for the exact placement in the scene, it was very purposeful. There was a far better composition nearer to the actual spot, but I didn't like the implications - yes, the tragic ending, but furthermore the elevation of Obama to MLK's level. He is coming up the stairs, paying respect, and perhaps taking the torch. Time will tell. Much like the other artists in the exhibition, I have a great deal of hope for the future and for Obama. I believe he is up to the task."
It's hard to focus on anything other then "Help Me. please...." or "the acid burns my eyes" or as one of the letters from Alex Pardee's show decries: "I want to come home to eat the pancakes. It's icky in here..." I had an advance preview of the show at Upper Playground, where the walls were littered with case file reports from hospital and police, hand written notes from the children trapped in Pardee's paintings, and a huge sculptural monstrosity (complete with a video screen belly depicting a live action child surrounded by the BBQ bowels of a captor). The Chris Berens show "Go West" last Friday (12.12.08) was truly a sight to behold. Chris' new collection of paintings for his show at Roq La Rue Gallery were nearly sold out by the time we arrived. As cold as it was for Seattle this year, I wouldn't have missed this show for the world, not even my terror for flying or my inept winter coat could keep me away. Kirsten Anderson, owner of Roq La Rue initially turned us on to the Neatherland artist this past year when she suggested him for a feature in Volume 9. More...
FriendsWithYou has a always been a highlight of the fest in recent years but: "Unlike the “Skywalkers” balloon parade of Art Basel Miami Beach ’06, which remained essentially a spectator event, the experience within SCOPE MIAMI ’08 will engage all aspects of the body and mind, providing for a euphoric art experience." We've always found their work infectious and featured them way back in volume 1.
