Art On The Edge - The New Contemporary breaks into The Hamptons
Written by Nathan Spoor    Friday, 30 July 2010 20:28

Breaking new ground in the art world is no easy feat. That being said, rock star curator Francesco LoCastro has never been one to let mere boundaries mandate the realms into which he brings his ambassadorship. The current exhibit in the Hamptons is just such an adventure. Art On The Edge - The New Contemporary, is now on exhibit through September at New York's premier fine art establishment, Vered Gallery. Follow us for a look at the exhibit after the jump.

Matt Dangler's Kult des Alchemist Spiegels
Written by Ken    Friday, 30 July 2010 20:20

Matt Dangler has taken a step back out of the shadows to give Hi-Fructose an exclusive look at his latest painting: "Kult des Alchemist Spiegels" (Cult of the Alchemist Mirror).  Dangler has been hitting the history books, honing and refining new processes and procedures for his work.  Check out what he has to say below:

"The last year I have mostly been focusing on the alchemy of my paintings... that is, messing with different mediums and paints to achieve the effects I was looking for. I certainly don't want to delve into the exact mediums and specific process I've come up with, but generally, what I will share is that I've studied Art History quite extensively, visited museums, and looked deeply into (mostly) Old Master techniques to find what works best for my paintings. What I found was that Da Vinci, Michelangelo... Vermeer... among others, used layers upon layers of glazing mediums to achieve a depth of color and light that simply can not be accomplished through a single layered opaque painting."

HF Vol. 15 cover artist James Jean recently released his latest creation, "Rift", through Chronicle Books.  Featuring a unique accordion-style layout, the book (we have one in the office, it's awesome!) folds together in various ways to create different paintings and sketches, depending on how you lay it out.  Did we mention that it's foil embossed, and comes signed by James Jean if you purchase it directly through his webstore?  Check out a couple more images of the book after the jump.

Buddy Nestor at the White Rabbit Lounge
Written by Yasmin    Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:34

When I hopped into the the White Rabbit Lounge with all Alice in Wonderland characters prancing through my mind, to the tune of Jefferson Airplane psychedelia, I was rather disappointed to find the patrons were not dripping from their stools. The bar was set at a disappointingly predictable 90 angle, and save for the odd patron who may have had too much, those seated at it were too. No hookah smoking caterpillars or men on the chessboard getting up to tell me where to go.

However, someone was paying homage to the Red Queen and her famous utterance, "Off with her head!"

Retna Installation at Rivera and Rivera
Written by Ken    Thursday, 29 July 2010 19:05

As Los Angeles-based gallery Rivera and Rivera gear up to relocate spaces in the coming weeks, they'll be hosting a one-night only event later this evening (Thursday, July 29th) featuring an installation by LA street artist Retna.  Following Retna's heavily publicized trip to the Art Basel: Switzerland Volta fair alongside collaborators El Mac, Kofie One, and Mear One, as well as recent murals in Culver City and on Skid Row, the street artist's repertoire takes another step forward (or outward we should say), as his latest installation extends into three dimensional space extending from the floor, ceiling and walls.

Check out some exclusive photos of the installation, here on Hi-Fructose.

Viva La Revolucion - Indoors
Written by Ken    Tuesday, 27 July 2010 19:09

Following a quick tour of San Diego's recent street art explosion (see previous post), Hi-Fructose paid a visit to the epicenter of it all with a trip down to the MCASD.  A heavy hitting exposition, Viva La Revolucion is a cross sectioning of the best international street artists working today.  With video and sound installations by JR and David Ellis, Faile's arcade games, Banksy print retrospective, Dzine custom cruisers, a towering Swoon piece and much, much more, the show serves as a great introduction to the world of contemporary street art, a feat that not only showcases the best of the best, but also (and most importantly), maintains the integrity of the outdoors in an indoor museum setting.  View a selection of our favorite works, after the jump.

Viva La Revolucion - Outdoors
Written by Ken    Tuesday, 27 July 2010 18:31

After posting Adam Rozan's recent coverage of the Viva La Revolucion opening at MCASD, Hi-Fructose simply had to check out the street-art museum show in person while visiting San Diego for Comic Con.  In addition to the exhibition at the museum, Viva La Revolucion features an extensive outdoor campaign of street art from many of the exhibiting (and some non-exhibiting) artists.  Check out detailed photos of two of our favorite outdoor pieces, by Os Gemeos and Shepard Fairey (HF Vol. 11), after the jump.
